8st 4lbs world championship Brit competition, Feb 12, 1898 in Birmingham
beating Joe Elms. He beat the coloured American on points over 12 rounds. The
competition originally billed as English, upgraded to “World”, means only men
with English parent could contest the English title, which meant the American
born, Elms was not eligible, so Barrett claimed Brit title as well.

THE EFFINGHAM THEATRE, then later the EAST LONDON THEATRE, was a large wooden
building (adjoining St Marys tube station) which burnt down in 1911.
Kid Mc Coy real name Max Moses was to be
tried for murder with 3 others, of Henry Brodduitz by stabbing ( Moses doing
the actual stabbing) on October 4, 1902. At the trial on November 25, 1902
Moses found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter for which he got 10
years on release he went to America
where it was stated he did well in business.

The granting of freedom of the city papers, this appears to be an almost essential to his occupation and allowed him to work in the City of London.
Besides being a Carman, and part time boxer, Thomas was a Waterside Labourer, and a Fruit Porter
Its not known how he got the nickname TREACLE, but a good guess is Treacle is what he carried as a Carman.

Newham.
